Little Tenzin had to drop out of school after 2nd grade as his family could no longer afford to send him to the local primary school. Due to dire poverty, they could not make ends meet and so his childhood was limited to helping his family in household chores and even lend a hand in the fields.
The Planet Spiti Foundation’s Founder met him in Koksar, Spiti on her way to Kaza from Manali in June 2021. Young Tenzin is now 9-years-old and Portia tried to convince his parents to send him back to school. With your help, support, and valuable contributions, Planet Spiti Foundation is striving to bring back Tenzin to school. Not only save Tenzin from an unfortunate childhood spoilt in no learnings but Planet Spiti also aims to bring education to more such children. Tenzin still works in the field with his mother and helps in household chores. Though, we are trying to help him read and learn. Due to similar family’s financial condition, many children are devoid of quality education and healthy meals. With regular nutrition made available for these young and bright minds from the valley, many lives can be transformed.
Planet Spiti Foundation aims to start a residential, green school for children in Spiti Valley for free. So, no children is denied of their right to Education due to poverty and hunger.

Support a Child’s Education
Becoming a sponsor will give you a chance to build a unique connection with a child at the World’s Highest Motorable Village, Komic in India. We have children that either need day school, boarding school or vocational sponsorship.
You could also choose to support children’s education by giving to our Education Fund which covers all of these types of schooling.
Day School Sponsorship
This programme is designed for children whose families are able to provide for their basic needs and give them lots of love and care, but where the family are not currently able to support the child’s educational costs. Many of the children we work with come from families living in poverty, who often struggle to afford basic necessities, let alone school fees.
We always work with the family to see what they are able to provide in order for the child to return to school and what they need us to provide. We believe that it’s important that the family show some commitment towards supporting their child’s education, even if it’s just providing them with some pencils.
Our dream is that one day, these families could be in a position to take over paying for their child’s education fully, so that Planet Spiti Foundation (with your help) can then support another child in need.
Day school sponsors are asked to pay ₹2000 a month for a child in primary school. A child in our day school sponsorship will receive some of the following based on individual needs:
- School fees, uniform and shoes
- Books and pens
- A team of well-trained social workers to care for them and follow their progress with their family
- A safe space to stay at our Residential school if ever required
- Medical care if needed
Boarding school sponsorship
Welcome to our child sponsorship program, where you can make a significant impact on a child’s life with just ₹7,000 per month. With your sponsorship, we can provide education, three meals daily, milk and fruits, uniforms, shoes, and warm bedding to a child in need.
Our child sponsorship program is designed to help underprivileged children receive a quality education, which is essential for their future success. With your support, we can provide a nurturing environment where children can learn and grow, regardless of their economic background.
Boarding school sponsors are asked to pay ₹7,000 a month for a child in primary school.
A child in our boarding school sponsorship programme will receive:
- Uniform, school shoes and other clothes
- School fees and school and boarding requirements
- Books and pens
- Transport
- A loving home when needed and medical care
- A team of well-trained staff to care for them and offer them regular counselling and advice

Program Description
This program started in April 2022 in Kaza, wherein three underprivileged children selected from Spiti Valley villages were enrolled for free education and accommodation.
No education or impacting lives can be achieved on a hungry stomach, and hence a mid-day meal program is set to be introduced. This program aims to provide the children residing and studying at the Planet Spiti Foundation’s Primary Learning Centre with a complete meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) as part of their routine during their school time and hostel.
The center will prepare a nutritionally balanced meal for five children on all working days in a year to begin with. The kitchen and other resources needed for preparing the meal are provided by the center. Local chefs will be employed to cook that ensure the quality and taste of the meal according to their unique Spitian palette.
Donate to this program and help one or all five children get access to meals for a month or a year. To feed each child (3 meals a day) for 30 days, it will costs us ₹7,000.

Dinner replaces the rice dish with chapatis on each day. Milk and fruits are distributed among the kids every day.
In addition to sponsoring a child, we also offer school sponsorship opportunities for businesses and individuals who are passionate about education. By contributing ₹10,000, ₹15,000, or ₹20,000 per month, you can help us build and run the world’s highest free residential school in Komic village at an altitude of 15,500 feet.
